🗓️ Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) → Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

  • Time: 5–7 hours | Distance: ~11 km

  • Habitat: Rainforest

  • Accommodation: Umbwe Cave Camp

  • Meals: Lunch, Dinner

  • Activities:

    • Immediate steep ascent through dense jungle

    • Dramatic tree roots and narrow ridges

  • Fun Fact: The trail climbs almost 1,000m on Day 1 — the steepest start on the mountain.


Day 2: Umbwe Camp → Barranco Camp (3,900m)

  • Time: 4–6 hours | Distance: ~6 km

  • Habitat: Heath

  • Accommodation: Barranco Camp

  • Meals: B, L, D

  • Activities:

    • Trek through moss-draped trees and emerge above the clouds

    • First panoramic views of the Southern Icefields

  • Fun Fact: The route merges with Machame/Lemosho from here onward.


Day 3: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (4,035m)

  • Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: ~6 km

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

  • Accommodation: Karanga Camp

  • Meals: B, L, D

  • Activities:

    • Scramble the iconic Barranco Wall (nicknamed “Breakfast Wall”)

    • Gentle descent and ascent across ridges

  • Fun Fact: The Barranco Wall is easier than it looks — and a highlight for many climbers.


Day 4: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,640m)

  • Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~4 km

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

  • Accommodation: Barafu Camp

  • Meals: B, L, D

  • Activities:

    • Hike over barren slopes

    • Prepare gear and rest for summit night

  • Fun Fact: “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili — and nights here can reach –10°C.


Day 5: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

  • Time: 12–14 hours | Distance: ~17 km

  • Accommodation: Mweka Camp

  • Meals: Light breakfast + late breakfast + dinner

  • Activities:

    • Midnight summit attempt

    • Enjoy sunrise from Uhuru Peak

    • Long descent back to lower altitude

  • Fun Fact: The glaciers you pass are some of the last tropical glaciers on Earth.


Day 6: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

  • Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~10 km

  • Meals: Breakfast

  • Activities:

    • Final walk through the rainforest

    • Return to Moshi for celebration

  • Fun Fact: You’ll receive a green (Gilman’s Point), gold (Stella), or gold-hologram (Uhuru) certificate depending on how far you reached.
